September is for Starting

September 26th - Whine about it Sep 26, 2025

Don’t feel like doing that task? Go ahead: whine about it.

You may still have to do it, but that doesn’t mean you have to love it. Sometimes giving yourself permission to grumble, roll your eyes, or mutter “ugh, fine” is exactly what gets you moving.

The truth is, you can whine and work at the same time. Fold laundry while complaining about socks. Pay bills while sighing about the numbers. Start the project while muttering under your breath.

Action still counts - even if it’s noisy, messy, or half-hearted.

So whine, moan, grumble a little, but do it anyway. You’ll feel better once it’s done.

What task could you “whine your way through” today?

September 25th - Make a sandwich Sep 25, 2025

Struggling to get into action? Try making a sandwich.

No, not a literal one (though that helps too, I’m a big fan of snacks). A time sandwich is when you layer work and play together to make starting easier:

  • Work – Play – Work: Do a short task, enjoy a break, then get back into another task.

  • Play – Work – Play: Give yourself a treat first, tackle the task, then reward yourself again.

It’s a simple way to trick your brain into motion: the “play” makes the “work” feel lighter, and the structure gives you built-in motivation to begin.

What could this look like?

I have a standing coffee and crafting date with a friend on her weekday off. After about 45 minutes we each naturally gravitate to our phones to check in with the morning’s messages. After 10-20 minutes of answering questions and getting other people set up with what they need, we make our way back to our projects for another hour or so. We mutually acknowledge we’re taking a short break to handle our own tasks, and we’re motivated to be efficient to get back to our crafting and coffee.

Likewise, I often use time sprints to crank out batches of content. I save specific crafts I love for mini breaks. If I want to do this craft, I need to write some newsletters.

What kind of sandwich could you make with your next task?

September 24th - Finish something Sep 24, 2025

Want to build momentum on a project that feels never-ending? Finish something.

Within every big project are smaller parts that can stand on their own:

  • Send one email.

  • Complete one form.

  • Clean one section.

  • Write one draft page.

By finishing even a small piece, you give yourself the satisfaction of closure, and that little win creates energy to keep going.

Momentum doesn’t come from staring at the whole mountain. It comes from reaching the first ledge and saying: “I finished this.”

What’s one small part of your project you could finish today?

September 23rd - Start in the middle Sep 23, 2025

Ever freeze up at the beginning of a project because you don’t know how to start?

Here’s a secret: you don’t have to start at the beginning.

Most projects don’t need to be tackled in a strict start-to-finish order. There’s almost always something you can do in the middle—sketch a section, write a paragraph, assemble one piece, clean one corner.

Action anywhere creates momentum everywhere.

Starting in the middle gets you moving, builds confidence, and often makes the “real” beginning feel much easier.

Next time you’re stuck, skip the beginning. Do a middle step and watch the momentum carry you forward.
