September is for Starting

September 18th - Work backwards Sep 18, 2025

Ever feel stuck because you don’t know what the next step is?

Here’s a trick: work backwards.

Instead of starting from where you are, imagine the project is already finished. Ask yourself:

  • What’s the very last thing I would do before it’s done?

  • And just before that?

  • And before that?

Step by step, working backwards helps you uncover the path forward. It takes away the guesswork, clears the brain fog, and gives you a clear sequence of actions you can follow.

If you’re blocked on “what’s next,” flip the question: What came just before the finish line?

September 17th - Do three steps Sep 17, 2025

Feeling stuck on a project? Try this simple trick: Do three steps.

  • First, ask yourself: What are the very first three steps I need to take?

  • Write them down.

  • Commit to just those three.

Here’s the key: once you’ve done your three steps, you have permission to stop.

But more often than not, momentum kicks in, and you’ll find yourself doing more without the pressure of “finishing it all.”

The “three steps” rule lowers the bar, gets you moving, and transforms an overwhelming project into something bite-sized and doable.

What JUST three steps could you take today to move your project forward?

September 16th - Set your clothes out the night before Sep 16, 2025

You’ve probably heard the classic tip: set out your clothes the night before.

It’s not really about clothes, it’s about removing barriers to getting into useful action.

When you prep in advance, you make it easier for your future self to get started. Think of it like rolling out a welcome mat for tomorrow’s task:

  • Lay out breakfast items so the morning feels smoother.

  • Stack the paperwork you’ll need for that appointment.

  • Gather the tools for your project so they’re ready to grab.

You can even make a short list of the few things that can’t be prepped ahead, so when the time comes, you’re not scrambling, you’re starting.

Preparation isn’t about doing more work. It’s about designing your environment so the hard thing feels lighter.

What could you “set out the night before” for your next big task?

September 15th - Get a body double Sep 15, 2025

Struggling to get started on something? Try working with a body double.

A body double is simply another person - friend, coworker, or even someone on Zoom - who works alongside you. They don’t have to help with your task. Just their presence creates accountability and focus.

Why it works:

  • You’re less likely to procrastinate when someone else is “there.”

  • It makes hard or boring tasks feel less isolating.

  • You can borrow their momentum to kickstart your own.

Your brain identifies that it’s being observed and goes into performance mode. Not only will you find it a bit easier to get moving, you may even find yourself doing a better job.

Whether it’s folding laundry with a friend on FaceTime, co-working with a colleague, or joining a virtual study/work session, body doubling helps you show up and start.

Who could you invite to be your body double this week?
